“The job is flexible around my lifestyle”

Alison - Truck Driver & Mum of Two
SRT Logistics

“I’ve now got time for more of what really matters.”

Alison was a latecomer to the transport industry. Despite a few years of experience in logistics earlier in life, she moved to administration to better juggle family responsibilities and raise her daughters. But when a family conversation turned to truck driving – her husband’s occupation – Alison was shocked when her daughter declared, “You couldn’t do that Mum, ’cause you’re a girl.” That was all Alison needed to hear. She went out, got her truck licence – even before having a job lined up – and set out to show her daughters that anything is possible. In her words, “You gotta know a strong woman to be one”, and she wanted to set an example.

“Transport has given me an opportunity as a Mum that was hard to find.”

A huge people person, Alison was tired of being stuck inside in a bland admin role and has embraced the change. Nearly all her mates now work in transport, and she loves the banter, camaraderie and friendships made on the road. Meeting people along the way is the best part of the job.

Alison started her driving career in her late 30s, when her daughter was 10, and found the flexibility perfect for her family life. She says, “The job is flexible around your lifestyle”, and there’s far more flexibility than people expect. SRT, her employer, has been really supportive, offering job sharing and understanding family needs.

She encourages others to give transport a go. It’s easy to get started and offers a broad range of opportunities for all education levels, with pathways to grow and switch roles.
