About the Role

Train drivers are responsible for operating freight locomotives safely and efficiently across Tasmania’s rail network. They ensure goods such as minerals, timber, and agricultural products reach ports and processing facilities on time—supporting industries across the state.

This is a role for those who enjoy structure, responsibility, and working independently. Drivers follow strict safety protocols, monitor train systems, and respond to changing track conditions. While much of the job is solitary, it’s a vital part of a close-knit rail operations team.

Becoming a train driver requires formal training and supervised driving experience, but no prior industry experience is necessary—just a strong safety mindset and willingness to learn. You’ll begin in support roles and progress through qualifications and practical training.

For career changers, it’s a rewarding path with clear progression, good pay, and the chance to contribute to a vital part of Tasmania’s infrastructure.
